Labor Day was a fun time this year. We've been wanting to get back to the Adirondacks ever since we camped at Cranberry Lake last Labor Day, and this was our first chance. We rented a little cabin on Loon Lake, and mostly had a fun weekend. Had any of us slept, it probably would have been entirely fun. Why, oh why, will Roen not sleep away from home?? At least we didn't have any neighbors to worry about waking.
It was also a little disappointing to go out in the canoe the first morning, only to find that it was the absolute tiniest canoe ever made. We were physically/emotionally incapable of keeping Halle and Roen from capsizing the boat for more than 15 minutes. Or at least, that was as long we could stand to make a go of it. The most stressful 15 minutes of my life. Too bad. We made up for it by throwing most of the shore back into the lake, one rock at a time. You have never seen joy, until you've seen Roen hucking rocks in a lake. Pure ecstasy. Halle spent her time painting and planting apple seeds in the backyard. Oh, and constant requests for "someone to play Sorry with me".
We also had a chance to see Lake Placid and take a gondola ride up Whiteface Mountain, both of which were very fun. I had no idea what a cutsie, boutique town Lake Placid is, but it is one swanky little town. Nothing wrong with a little swank now and then, I suppose. So go labor! Or laborers, unions, or whatever this day off is about. We like it.
